"Virginia Wines In The Spotlight: Novelty And Pride Shine Through"

...."2014 Michael Shaps Petit Manseng ($30)

Petit Manseng won the night in terms of its novelty (“If I ever had another child I’d name her Petit Manseng…”) matched with a pure ease and pleasure of drinking. Tasters didn’t mistake its ease for lack of character, however; they appreciated its depth, length of finish, and honeyed notes on the palate."

"why virginia is for wine lovers" by Lettie Teague, On Wine

Featuring the 2015 Michael Shaps Petit Manseng

"Though Virginia is one of the oldest states in the Union, its modern wine country is only about 40 years old. The state now has seven wine subregions, including the fantastically titled Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace. With limited time, I spent most of my trip in the Monticello region, home to the highest concentration of top wineries. Of course, given the youth of the industry, producers acknowledge that the best vineyard sites may not yet be known.

The same is true of the best grapes, and many vintners seem to be hedging their bets by producing all sorts of wines. Mr. Shaps, for example, produces a Bordeaux-style red, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, a white blend, Chardonnay and Viognier, in addition to his lush, powerful Petit Manseng—all priced between $25 and $58."
