Michael Shaps - OWNer & WINEMAKER
Michael has been making wine in central Virginia since 1995. He previously worked with two highly regarded central Virginia wineries – Jefferson Vineyards, and King Family Vineyards. He currently works as a consultant to wineries in several states and has been involved in the startup of more than ten wineries.
He was the winner of the Virginia Governor’s Cup Wine Competition in 2004 and has been mentioned in numerous wine publications such as Saveur, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Wine Advocate, Washingtonian, and The Washington Post. Michael is also a partner in Maison Shaps Winery in Meursault, France. Michael oversees all Michael Shaps Wineworks operations. He holds a BPA (Brevet Professionnel Agricole) in Enology and Viticulture from Lycée Viticole de Beaune, France. In addition, he has a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from Skidmore College.
Jake BuschinG - VINEYARD management services
Jake Busching joined the Wineworks team in July 2015 with a wealth of experience and an outstanding reputation in the Virginia wine industry. Growing up on a Midwestern farm prepared Jake for the agricultural aspects of the wine industry and learning the trade from Michael and viticulturist Chris Hill launched him on a path of high-end Virginia viticulture and winemaking. Jake believes in soil-to-bottle wine growing and has brought that focus to bear at wineries like Keswick Vineyards, Pollak Vineyards, Grace Estate Winery, and now Michael Shaps Wineworks. Jake sits on the board of the Monticello Wine Trail and serves on the Research and Education Committee for the Virginia Vineyards Association as well.
Joy Ting - Production Manager & Head Enologist
Joy first came to Michael Shaps Wineworks as one of the first custom crush clients in 2008. After 10 years of teaching science in the Charlottesville area at both Piedmont Virginia Community College and Covenant, she decided to transistion to a career in the wine industry in July 2013. Since that time, she has been running the Wineworks lab and overseeing the scientific aspects of our wine production. She holds a PhD in Applied Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as a Certificate of Enology from Piedmont Virginia Community College.
